“Success requires the right combination of ignorance and confidence.”
When I heard this quote on the radio, it made me stop in my tracks. Is that really true? I immediately began evaluating the theory. When have I witnessed a measure of success? The first thing that popped into my head was Transformations Thrift Store at the corner of 13th and B Street.
I remember sitting around with a small group of people from F Street Church, dreaming about how beneficial it would be to have a thrift store in the neighborhood. “Let’s do it!” We decided. How hard could it be? Very, very hard. But we didn’t know (ignorance). We just believed we could do it (confidence).
I wonder where faith and God’s calling fit into the mix. Faith says, “I can’t do it. But God can.” As we get older, I wonder if we get “wiser” (less ignorant) and also less willing to take risks (less confident). As a result, we become less willing to step out in faith, though in theory we should be more equipped to do so. This is unfortunate, because “without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).”
