Every Game Matters

If you’re a Major League Baseball fan, you know that 162 regular season games is a lot of games. Around this time of year, it’s easy to slip into thinking that a single game doesn’t really matter. Most fans don’t even start paying close attention to the standings until after the All-Star break.

Except… if your team misses the playoffs by three games. Or one game. Or half a game.

Then you find yourself yelling in frustration, “IF WE HAD ONLY WON THAT ONE GAME BACK IN APRIL!” And suddenly, even the early games do feel like a big deal—especially if your team has never made it to the World Series.

I think life is a lot like that.

The average lifespan is about 78 years. That’s roughly 28,470 days. Maybe it’s not until midway through our own “season” that we start paying attention to the standings. But eventually, we begin to realize something important:

Our lives are made up of months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes. And each one can matter.

Any single day could make a huge difference:

  • You could make a memory with a child that they will treasure forever.
  • You could encourage someone—and change the course of their future.
  • You could forgive someone—and change the course of your future.
  • You could lead someone to the Lord—and change their eternity.
  • You could create a budget, schedule that long-overdue doctor’s appointment, or finally start writing the book that’s been on your heart—small steps with lifelong impact.
  • Or… you could make one choice—good or bad—that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

So make each day count. Make your regular season the best it can be.

“The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
For he knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
Our days on earth are like grass;
like wildflowers, we bloom and die.
The wind blows, and we are gone—
as though we had never been here.
But the love of the Lord remains forever
with those who fear him.
His salvation extends to the children’s children
of those who are faithful to his covenant,
of those who obey his commandments.”
—Psalm 103:13–18 (NLT)
